[Juba, Southern Sudan] - The Governor of the Upper Nile State Mr. Galwak Deng Garang has called for the freedom of the media to enlighten the public as to the GOSS and State Government activities, so that the citizens in the ten states of Southern Sudan are aware of the new things happening, Mr Galwak commented yesterday on Monday during a meeting with the GOSS minister of Information and Broadcasting H.E Gabriel Changson. The Governor stated that the media have a great role to play enlightening people about the 5th population census.
“…Last week I attended the Governors forum organized by the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) in Juba , President of GOSS H.E Salva Kiir Mayardit directed us to the proper way of the job description. Through the knowledge and experience that I have gained I will be able to apply to the state as a new method.” He says.
The Governor Galwak Deng explained that “…I am here to know the planning of the GOSS Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Juba ….” He asked for the rotation of the staff in GOSS and State to share experience and knowledge for the development of the media in Southern Sudan . “…Let us not only depend on the oil revenue, as agriculture is the main resource for our development in Southern Sudan ,” the Governor expressed.
H.E Gabriel Changson says “…I have five months in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and I will struggle to promote media in the southern Sudan .” He pointed out that radio Gumba station is now covering the ten states of Southern Sudan . He assured that his Ministry will organize a joint workshop in Juba between GOSS and state ministers of Information for lying down the media regulations in Southern Sudan in the coming months of this year. Minister Changson added that his Ministry have opportunities for capacity building abroad, places such as South Africa , Nairobi , Khartoum , and Egypt . Soon his personnel will be sent for training again.
“…I am now preparing to open South Sudan Satellite TV channel which will cover Juba, Wau, and Malakal within the second week of April 2008…” to cover the activities of the ten states in Southern Sudan,” H.E Changson said.
Minister Gabriel revealed that the Ministry will also open a Southern Sudan Agency within the near future, which will contain information from the ten states of Southern Sudan .
